Breaking Barriers: The ‘Statue of Equality’ Honoring B R Ambedkar in North America

In a grand celebration of art and the legacy of Dr. B R Ambedkar, the “largest” statue of this iconic figure outside of India is set to be unveiled on October 14th in Maryland. The 19-foot masterpiece, aptly named the “Statue of Equality,” is the creation of renowned artist and sculptor Ram Sutar, who previously crafted the impressive statue of Sardar Patel installed in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

This historic event signifies not only the commemoration of Dr. Ambedkar, the chief architect of India's Constitution but also the embodiment of his ideals on foreign soil. The statue finds its home within the expansive grounds of the Ambedkar International Center (AIC), spanning across 13 acres in Accokeek, Maryland.

The AIC, the driving force behind this monumental project, proclaimed, “This is the largest statue of Babasaheb outside India and has been installed as a part of the Ambedkar Memorial being constructed at this center.” It’s a fitting tribute to a visionary whose ideas have continued to inspire and guide generations. The event is anticipated to draw a significant gathering of Ambedkarite enthusiasts and followers from the United States and various parts of the world.

The significance of this remarkable endeavor goes beyond a mere statue. The Ambedkar International Center envisions this memorial as a bastion for the teachings and messages of Babasaheb, ensuring they resonate across cultures and borders. It stands as a symbol of equality and human rights, carrying forward the torch that Dr. Ambedkar lit with the drafting of India's Constitution.

International dignitaries from diverse countries are expected to grace the grand unveiling ceremony on October 14th. The event, slated to be a momentous occasion, will see the fusion of art, history, and a resounding commitment to the principles of equality and justice that Dr. B R Ambedkar championed.

The ‘Statue of Equality’ transcends the boundaries of time and geography, standing as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of an individual whose influence extends far beyond his homeland. As the eyes of the world turn to Maryland on October 14th, it will be a moment to celebrate the ideals of unity, justice, and equality that Dr. Ambedkar ardently championed throughout his life.
