US Veto on Gaza Ceasefire Resolution Sparks International Outcry

A dramatic turn of events at the United Nations Security Council, the world watched in disappointment as the United States exercised its veto power, blocking a crucial resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip. China, expressing deep regret, criticized the move, highlighting what it sees as American hypocrisy and double standards.

The resolution, proposed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on behalf of Arab countries, aimed at an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages. With an overwhelming 13 votes in favor and only one abstention from the UK, the resolution seemed destined for success until the US cast its solitary rejection.

Chinese Ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, minced no words in criticizing the US stance. "The two months of conflict have caused unprecedented death and destruction, and an immediate ceasefire is the prerequisite for everything. On this issue, any negative attitude is untenable, and any justification (of rejection) is feeble," Zhang declared.

The international community echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the urgency of halting the hostilities. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a high risk of the total collapse of the humanitarian support system in Gaza, with devastating consequences looming. Guterres revealed a shocking toll of the conflict: over 17,000 Palestinians killed, including 4,000 women and 7,000 children. Tens of thousands are reportedly injured or missing, as attacks from air, land, and sea continue unabated, targeting vital infrastructure such as education and healthcare facilities, mosques, and churches.

Zhang, while expressing disappointment over the veto, emphasized that the international calls for a ceasefire and the prevention of a greater humanitarian disaster would persist. He called on Israel to heed these calls, cease collective punishment in Gaza, and support diplomatic efforts for the release of detained individuals. Zhang also urged all relevant parties to unite in their efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.

The situation has reached such a critical point that Secretary-General Guterres invoked Article 99, a rare move that allows him to bring matters threatening international peace and security to the attention of the Security Council. This marked the first time Guterres utilized this power since taking office in 2017.

Critics argue that the Israel-Palestine conflict has escalated over the last two months, with the humanitarian crisis worsening despite short-lived ceasefires. The interference of the US, they claim, has rendered the UN mute in its role of promoting peace. Sun Degang, director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Fudan University, expressed frustration, stating, "The UN overall has not played its role of promoting peace due to the interference of the US, and its functions have been rendered mute."

Despite the setback at the Security Council, hopes remain high for international cooperation. Analysts are urging the US to listen to the joint calls of the global community and collaborate with China to achieve a phased ceasefire, offering a glimmer of hope in the face of an unfolding humanitarian crisis. As the world watches, the pressure mounts for decisive action to bring peace to the troubled region.
